Tesla HW3 Owners Report FSD v14 Lite Overheating Issues

Tesla's rollout of FSD (Supervised) v14 Lite has brought the company's latest Full Self-Driving software to older Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles. While many owners are impressed by the improved driving behavior, a growing number are reporting a new problem: Autopilot computer overheating.

Over the past several days, multiple HW3 owners have shared screenshots from Tesla's Service Mode showing AP ECU Over Temperature faults after driving with FSD v14 Lite. In some cases, the overheating became severe enough that Full Self-Driving disengaged and could not be restarted until the system cooled down.

Although the reports currently involve only a small number of vehicles, the similarities between them suggest the issue deserves attention.


Multiple Owners Are Reporting the Same Symptoms

One Tesla owner shared that FSD v14 Lite repeatedly displayed red steering wheel warnings before refusing to re-engage.

After opening Tesla Service Mode, the owner discovered the cause: the Autopilot ECU had exceeded its safe operating temperature, reaching approximately 96°C.

Another HW3 owner reported an even more extreme case. According to the Service Mode diagnostics, the Autopilot computer climbed to 102°C, after which the "Start Self-Driving" button disappeared completely from the vehicle.

Rather than allowing the computer to continue operating at excessive temperatures, Tesla's software appears to disable FSD automatically to protect the hardware from potential damage.

Some owners reported that the feature returned after the vehicle cooled down, while others claimed the overheating persisted until the car was serviced.


Why Is FSD v14 Lite Running Hotter on HW3?

Tesla has not officially acknowledged the reports, but several technical factors may help explain why some HW3 vehicles are experiencing thermal issues after upgrading to FSD v14 Lite.

FSD v14 Lite Places a Much Heavier Workload on HW3

Despite its name, FSD v14 Lite is far from a basic software update.

The software is a compressed version of Tesla's latest FSD v14 neural network, allowing legacy HW3 vehicles to access many of the same driving improvements available on newer Hardware 4 (HW4) cars.

Compared with FSD v12, the newer model performs significantly more AI inference, processes more driving scenarios simultaneously, and keeps the Autopilot computer under sustained high utilization.

The result is simple: more computation produces more heat.


HW3 Hardware Is Beginning to Show Its Age

Tesla's Hardware 3 computer launched in 2019 and has powered millions of vehicles worldwide.

However, today's AI models are substantially larger than those originally designed for HW3.

Industry estimates suggest that HW3 provides only around one-eighth of the memory bandwidth available on HW4. With fewer hardware resources available, the processor must remain under heavier load for longer periods, naturally generating more heat.

This doesn't necessarily mean HW3 cannot run FSD v14 Lite, but it does mean the platform has much less thermal headroom than Tesla's latest hardware.


Summer Temperatures May Be Making the Problem Worse

Most overheating reports have surfaced during the North American summer, when ambient temperatures are already placing additional stress on vehicle cooling systems.

During extended FSD drives, multiple systems—including the battery, HVAC system, heat pump, and Autopilot computer—share the vehicle's thermal management system.

When outside temperatures are high, cooling capacity becomes more limited, making it easier for the Autopilot ECU to reach Tesla's thermal protection threshold.

This may explain why some owners experience overheating while others running the same software do not.


Aging Cooling Systems Could Also Play a Role

Software may not be the only contributing factor.

Many HW3 vehicles have been on the road for several years, meaning their cooling systems may no longer perform exactly as they did when new.

Potential factors include:

  • Low coolant level
  • Dirty or partially blocked front radiators
  • Reduced cooling efficiency over time
  • Air trapped within the cooling loop
  • Reduced airflow caused by road debris

Under normal driving conditions these issues may go unnoticed, but the higher computational demands of FSD v14 Lite could expose weaknesses in the cooling system.


What Can Tesla Owners Do?

While Tesla has not released an official fix, owners experiencing repeated thermal warnings may benefit from checking the overall health of the vehicle's cooling system.

Some independent Tesla technicians recommend:

  • Inspecting coolant levels.
  • Cleaning debris from the front radiator and condenser.
  • Verifying the cooling fans operate correctly.
  • Monitoring AP ECU temperatures through Service Mode if overheating warnings continue.

These steps are unlikely to solve every case, but they may improve cooling efficiency during extended FSD use, particularly in hot weather.


Tesla Will Likely Continue Optimizing FSD v14 Lite

The good news is that this appears to be a software optimization challenge rather than evidence of a widespread hardware defect.

Tesla has a long history of improving FSD performance through over-the-air software updates. Previous releases have reduced processor utilization, optimized neural network execution, and improved resource scheduling without requiring hardware changes.

As more HW3 vehicles receive FSD v14 Lite, Tesla will gain significantly more real-world thermal data, allowing engineers to further refine the software for older hardware.

Seasonal conditions may also help. With cooler weather approaching in many regions later this year, thermal loads should naturally decrease, reducing the likelihood of overheating during long FSD drives.

For now, the reports suggest that FSD v14 Lite is pushing HW3 closer to its thermal limits than previous software versions, but they do not indicate that every HW3 vehicle will experience the issue. Owners should continue monitoring software updates, as Tesla is likely to deliver additional optimizations as the rollout expands.
