6-Seat Tesla Model YL Could Launch in South Korea Soon

Tesla’s six-seat Model Y variant may soon enter another major international market. New regulatory filings from the Korea Energy Agency indicate that the Tesla Model Y L could be preparing for launch in South Korea.

The certification documents, first spotted by Tesla observer @Tslachan, show that the vehicle has already completed energy efficiency testing. In most cases, this stage comes shortly before Tesla opens orders in a new market.

If the timeline follows Tesla’s typical rollout pattern, South Korea could soon become one of the first countries outside China to receive the long-wheelbase Model Y L.

What Is the Tesla Model Y L?

The Tesla Model Y L is a long-wheelbase version of the Model Y designed specifically to accommodate six passengers comfortably.

Unlike the optional third row in the standard Model Y, which places two smaller seats in the rear cargo area, the Model Y L was engineered with additional space from the start. Tesla extended the wheelbase by 150 mm and increased the overall body length by 177 mm.

These changes allow for a proper 2-2-2 seating configuration, giving the second row two individual captain’s chairs and creating easier access to the third row.

For families that have outgrown the standard five-seat layout, the Model Y L offers a much more practical interior.

Key design highlights include:

  • True 6-seat Tesla Model Y configuration (2-2-2 layout)
  • Extended wheelbase for improved cabin space
  • Individual second-row seats with better comfort
  • Easier access to the third row compared with the standard Model Y

The result is a vehicle that sits between a midsize electric SUV and a larger family-focused EV.

Tesla Model Y L Specs Revealed in South Korean Filing

The South Korean certification filing also revealed several important Tesla Model Y L specs.

According to the documents, the South Korean version of the vehicle will use a 97.25 kWh battery pack supplied by LG Energy Solution. The larger battery helps compensate for the increased weight and size of the long-wheelbase model.

The filing also confirms the six-passenger seating configuration.

While Tesla has not officially published full specifications for every market yet, the Model Y L is expected to deliver a competitive driving range while maintaining the performance and efficiency the Model Y platform is known for.

Interior Upgrades Focused on Comfort

Beyond the additional seating space, the Tesla Model Y L includes several upgrades aimed at improving passenger comfort.

The interior features a larger 16-inch central touchscreen, offering more display space for navigation, media, and vehicle controls.

Tesla has also reportedly tuned the suspension system to prioritize ride comfort over sporty handling. This adjustment makes sense for a vehicle designed primarily for families and long-distance travel.

Together, these changes give the Model Y L a more refined and relaxed driving character compared with the standard Model Y.

From China Exclusive to Global Expansion

The Model Y L first launched in China last summer and quickly gained attention from buyers who wanted a larger Tesla SUV without stepping up to the Model X.

At launch, the vehicle started at around 339,000 yuan, roughly $49,000 USD, making it significantly more accessible than Tesla’s flagship SUV.

Initially, the Model Y L was only available in the Chinese market. That exclusivity is now beginning to change.

Tesla has already confirmed that the vehicle will launch in Australia and New Zealand in 2026, marking the first expansion beyond China. The recent South Korean regulatory filing suggests that additional international markets could follow soon.

Why the Model Y L Matters for Tesla’s Future

The expansion of the Tesla Model Y L could play an important role in Tesla’s global strategy.

As Tesla gradually reduces the availability of the Model X in some markets, the company still needs a larger family-oriented vehicle in its lineup. The long-wheelbase Model Y fills that gap by offering three rows of seating at a lower price point.

For buyers looking for a practical electric SUV with six seats, the Model Y L may become one of Tesla’s most important vehicles in the coming years.

With regulatory approval already underway in South Korea and confirmed launches in Australia and New Zealand, the global rollout of the 6-seat Tesla Model Y may just be getting started.
