Tesla Model YL Spotted Again in Palo Alto, U.S. Launch Looking Imminent

A camouflaged Tesla Model Y L has been spotted once again on the streets of Palo Alto, California, this time riding on what appears to be new 19" or 20" wheels. The sighting has set the Tesla community buzzing, and when you stack it on top of everything else we've seen over the past few months, it's becoming increasingly hard to argue that a U.S. launch isn't right around the corner.

From China to the World — How the Model Y L Got Here

Tesla originally launched the Model Y L in China back in August 2025, starting at around $47,000. The vehicle stretches the standard Model Y's wheelbase by 150mm (5.9 inches) and adds roughly 180mm (7 inches) of overall length, unlocking a genuine 2-2-2 captain's chair seating layout across all three rows. That's a fundamental departure from the standard Model Y 7-Seater infamous third row — a configuration more suitable for children than adults. Since its China debut, the Model Y L has expanded to more than ten countries worldwide, with Tesla pushing into new markets throughout early 2026. That global rollout shows Tesla is serious about scaling this vehicle well beyond its launch market.

Europe: Type-Approved and Ready to Go

European buyers have been watching closely, and for good reason. The Dutch vehicle authority (RDW) confirmed EU type approval for the Model Y L, meaning Tesla has cleared the regulatory hurdle to sell the vehicle across the continent. Before any public announcement, a lightly camouflaged prototype was already caught testing at a charging station near the Nürburgring — strong proof that a European-spec Model Y L was in active development.

In the meantime, Tesla has opened up a standard Model Y seven-seat option across Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and other European markets — though at €2,500 extra for a third row that, frankly, still doesn't offer much legroom. The real prize for European families remains the Model Y L, with its properly extended wheelbase, and it appears Tesla is getting closer to making that happen.

U.S. Launch: From "Maybe Never" to Testing in Tesla's Backyard

Elon Musk wasn't exactly bullish on a U.S. launch when the Model Y L debuted. Back in August 2025, he stated that U.S. production wouldn't start until late 2026 at the earliest — and added it might not come to the U.S. at all, citing the rise of autonomy as a reason larger family SUVs could eventually become unnecessary.

That logic hasn't aged particularly well.

Interstate 280 cuts straight through Silicon Valley, running close to both Tesla's Palo Alto offices and its Fremont factory — a stretch of road Tesla has historically used for real-world prototype validation. Spotting the Model Y L there is about as direct a signal as you can get. Then there's the drone footage from Fremont, which captured a camouflaged Model Y L lapping the factory's test track. Add in the Model Y L body frames previously spotted at Giga Texas, and you have a clear, consistent picture: Tesla is moving fast on U.S. market preparation.

Independence Day Launch? The Rumors Are Heating Up

According to an exclusive report, Tesla has internally targeted August or September for a North American launch, with Giga Texas currently undergoing tooling changes to support Model Y L production. That timeline already represents a significant pull-forward from Musk's original late 2026 comments.

But the latest chatter goes even further. Reports have surfaced suggesting Tesla may time the Model Y L reveal to coincide with America's 250th Independence Day celebration — a Reddit user even posted a screenshot of a conversation with a Tesla representative pointing to that window. Nothing is confirmed, and internal targets can shift, but the signals are stacking up.

Industry analyst Sam Fiorani at AutoForecast Solutions has previously projected U.S. production kicking off in September 2026, with first customer deliveries possible before the end of the year.

Filling the Hole Left by Model X

The timing here matters beyond just product cadence. With Tesla winding down Model X production, the lineup has a genuine gap for buyers who need more than five seats. The Cybertruck serves a completely different audience. That leaves the Model Y L as the only realistic answer for families who need true six-passenger capacity in an electric vehicle — and at a price point that's expected to land well below where the Model X used to sit.

Tesla hasn't confirmed pricing, trim levels, or an official launch date for the U.S. market. But with a camouflaged prototype turning heads in Palo Alto and lapping the Fremont test track, the question has clearly shifted. It's no longer if the Model Y L comes to North America. It's just a matter of when.
