2027 Model Y Features Just Leaked | Is It Worth The Upgrade?

Tesla appears to be preparing a series of meaningful upgrades for the Model 3 and Model Y lineup.

While none of these changes should be considered officially confirmed until Tesla announces them, recent parts discoveries, regulatory filings, vehicle teardowns and software findings point to several interesting developments.

Among the most notable are a new 50W actively cooled wireless charging pad, a potential 16-inch display for the Model 3, upgraded interior materials, changes to Model Y Performance power delivery, and continued expansion of Tesla's AI computing infrastructure.

At the same time, the new six-seat Model Y L is bringing premium features such as a 19-speaker audio system and bidirectional home charging to the Model Y family.

Here's what we know so far.

2027 model Y interior

A 50W Wireless Charger Could Finally Solve Tesla's Heat Problem

One of the most practical upgrades coming to future Tesla vehicles may also be one of the smallest.

Tesla appears to be preparing a redesigned wireless phone charger with active cooling.

The current wireless charging pad in the Model 3 can generate significant heat, particularly when charging modern smartphones at higher power. In some cases, excessive heat can cause charging speeds to drop or even interrupt charging.

The new design reportedly addresses this problem with a built-in fan.

More importantly, the new charger could support up to 50W of wireless charging, a major increase over the roughly 15W capability of the current system.

The cooling fan would push air through the charging pad and across the smartphone, helping keep temperatures under control during fast wireless charging.

Tesla is already using a similar component in the China-market Model Y L, suggesting that this may not simply be a prototype.

Instead, Tesla could eventually bring the technology to additional Model 3 and Model Y configurations.

For Tesla owners, this is exactly the kind of small hardware upgrade that could make everyday use noticeably better.

Model 3 Could Get a Larger 16-Inch Display

Another interesting discovery concerns the Model 3's central touchscreen.

The current Model 3 uses a 15.4-inch display, but Tesla's backend and parts information reportedly point toward a new 16-inch panel.

The upgrade isn't simply about increasing screen size.

The new display is reportedly listed with a resolution of 2560 × 440, while its aspect ratio could move closer to 16:9.

According to the reported specifications, pixel density could increase by roughly 33%.

The result would be a slightly wider but somewhat shorter display, potentially changing the visual proportions of the dashboard.

Tesla has already demonstrated its willingness to update hardware without completely redesigning the interior. If the 16-inch screen makes its way into production Model 3 vehicles, it would represent another incremental upgrade to the cabin.

Black Alcantara Could Give the Model 3 a More Premium Interior

Tesla may also be preparing a more upscale interior option for the Model 3.

Parts information reportedly points to a black Alcantara-style headliner, similar to the material Tesla already uses in more premium configurations.

The material is currently associated with higher-end Tesla interiors, including versions of the Model Y.

Bringing it to the Model 3 would help further differentiate premium configurations without requiring a major redesign.

This could also fit into Tesla's broader strategy of offering more premium features through software, hardware packages and higher-margin configurations rather than creating completely different vehicles.

Model Y Performance Could Receive a Different Power Distribution

One of the more technically interesting leaks comes from China.

Regulatory information reportedly provides preliminary specifications for a future 2027 Model Y Performance.

The numbers suggest a change in how Tesla distributes power between the front and rear motors.

The reported front motor output increases from approximately 158 kW to 176 kW, while the rear motor output decreases from around 303 horsepower to 291 horsepower.

In other words, Tesla could be shifting more of the vehicle's available power toward the front axle.

That doesn't necessarily mean the car will simply become "more powerful." Instead, the change could be related to traction, thermal management, efficiency or the way Tesla's software manages the dual-motor system.

Tesla has increasingly relied on software to optimize its electric powertrains, so changes in motor calibration can be just as important as changes to peak horsepower.

The regulatory filing should be treated as an early indication rather than confirmation of the final production specification.

2027 Model Y Performance

Model Y L Brings a More Premium Six-Seat Configuration

Tesla's new Model Y L represents a much more substantial expansion of the Model Y family.

The extended-wheelbase Model Y introduces a 2+2+2 six-seat layout, giving the vehicle three rows while maintaining a more premium interior configuration.

The vehicle is approximately 196 inches long and uses an 83 kWh battery pack.

Depending on wheel configuration, Tesla lists an estimated range of around 320–325 miles.

Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is reported at approximately 4.4 seconds.

But some of the most interesting upgrades aren't related to range or acceleration.

A 19-Speaker Audio System

The Model Y L features a 19-speaker audio system, including a subwoofer and dedicated audio hardware for the second row.

Unlike the standard Model Y, where rear passengers primarily receive audio from the front sound system, the Model Y L is designed to provide a more immersive experience throughout the cabin.

This makes sense for a three-row vehicle.

Passengers in the second and third rows are much farther away from the front speakers, so Tesla has added hardware to compensate for the larger cabin.

PowerShare Can Turn the Model Y Into a Backup Power Source

Another major feature is Tesla's PowerShare bidirectional charging technology.

The Model Y L can reportedly provide up to approximately 11.5 kW of power, allowing the vehicle to supply electricity to a home when paired with the appropriate hardware.

This effectively turns the vehicle into a large mobile battery.

Instead of simply consuming electricity from the grid, the vehicle can potentially send stored energy back into the home.

Tesla has already introduced similar functionality with vehicles such as the Cybertruck, but expanding bidirectional charging to the Model Y platform could be much more significant because of the Model Y's much larger potential customer base.

The important point is that this isn't simply another convenience feature.

It could eventually make Tesla vehicles part of a broader home energy ecosystem, connecting cars, solar generation, batteries and household electricity management.

Tesla Is Also Scaling Cortex 2

The hardware improvements inside the vehicles are only one part of Tesla's larger technology strategy.

Behind the scenes, Tesla is dramatically increasing its AI computing capacity.

Tesla reportedly increased the AI training capacity at its Texas computing infrastructure from roughly 135 MW at the end of Q1 to around 260 MW at the end of Q2, with further expansion planned.

The system, known as Cortex 2, is designed to support Tesla's AI development.

That includes:

  • FSD

  • Robotaxi technology

  • Optimus

  • Autonomous driving models

  • Neural-network training

  • Fleet video processing

This is important because Tesla's future vehicles increasingly depend on software rather than traditional mechanical upgrades.

More computing capacity means Tesla can train larger models using more real-world driving data.

In other words, the next generation of Tesla vehicles may not simply be defined by better batteries or faster motors.

They may increasingly be defined by better AI.

What These Updates Tell Us About Tesla's Strategy

Taken together, these developments reveal an interesting pattern.

Tesla doesn't appear to be preparing one giant revolutionary hardware redesign.

Instead, the company is making a series of incremental improvements across several layers of the vehicle.

The 50W cooled wireless charger improves everyday usability.

The 16-inch Model 3 display modernizes the cabin.

The Alcantara headliner adds a premium touch.

The Model Y Performance powertrain changes could improve vehicle dynamics.

The Model Y L expands Tesla's family-oriented market with six seats, premium audio and bidirectional charging.

And behind all of this, Cortex 2 is providing the computing infrastructure Tesla needs to continue developing FSD, Robotaxi and Optimus.

That combination is arguably more important than any single feature.

Tesla's next generation of vehicles appears to be moving toward a model where the hardware, software, AI and energy systems become increasingly interconnected.

And if these reported upgrades make it into production, the next Model 3 and Model Y could feel significantly more advanced—even without looking dramatically different from today's cars.
