Tesla Confirms FSD v15 Will Run on Hardware 4, Ending AI5 Upgrade Fears

Tesla Confirms FSD v15 Will Run on Hardware 4, Ending AI5 Upgrade Fears

Tesla Confirms FSD v15 Compatibility With Hardware 4

Tesla has officially addressed one of the biggest concerns among owners and enthusiasts: whether the next major Full Self-Driving update will require new hardware. During the Q1 2026 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that FSD v15 will run on the current Hardware 4 (AI4) system.

This clarification puts an end to months of speculation that Tesla’s upcoming AI5 chip would be necessary to support the next generation of self-driving software. For current owners, it means their vehicles remain fully in the roadmap toward autonomy.

Why AI4 Compatibility Matters

Hardware concerns had been growing for a reason. Tesla’s AI4 system, while powerful, includes around 16GB of memory—far less than what many expected would be required for the company’s next-generation neural networks.

With rumors pointing toward a major leap in model size and complexity, many assumed AI5 would be essential. Musk’s confirmation shows Tesla is continuing to optimize its software to run efficiently on existing hardware rather than forcing early upgrades.

For owners of newer vehicles like the Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, and Tesla Cybertruck, this is a major reassurance.

The Shift to a 10-Billion-Parameter Model

The concern over hardware limits intensified after Musk revealed plans in 2025 to scale Tesla’s neural networks by 10 times—from roughly 1 billion parameters to 10 billion.

Originally expected to arrive with FSD v14, this upgrade has now been pushed to v15. The delay led many to believe the model was too large for AI4 to handle.

However, Tesla appears to be relying on advanced techniques like model optimization and distillation—reducing large AI models into smaller, efficient versions that maintain performance while fitting within hardware limits.

FSD v14 Progress and the Road to v15

Tesla’s current software already shows significant improvements. Recent updates to FSD v14, including version 14.3, have delivered smoother driving behavior, quicker response times, and better real-world performance.

According to Musk, the system is already safer than human drivers in many scenarios. While that claim will continue to be debated, it highlights Tesla’s confidence in its trajectory.

FSD v15 is expected to be a much bigger leap. Instead of incremental improvements, it represents a full architectural overhaul designed to dramatically increase safety and reliability.

When Will Unsupervised FSD Launch?

Tesla plans to introduce unsupervised Full Self-Driving in regions where regulations allow it. Musk indicated that early versions could be based on late v14 or early v15 builds.

However, broader deployment—including robotaxi services—will likely depend on fully validating v15 at scale. Current expectations point to a release window between late 2026 and early 2027.

This timeline suggests Tesla is prioritizing safety validation and real-world performance over rushing to market.

A Future-Proof Fleet Strategy

One of the biggest takeaways from this announcement is Tesla’s commitment to supporting its existing fleet. Rather than requiring constant hardware upgrades, the company continues to push the limits of what current systems can achieve.

This approach reinforces Tesla’s long-standing promise that vehicles equipped with its latest hardware are “autonomy-ready.” With FSD v15 on the horizon, that promise is entering its most critical phase yet.

For millions of Tesla owners, the message is clear: your car is still part of the future.
