Tesla Model 3 Range Jumps to 572 KM in Europe — And the Reason Is Surprisingly Simple

Tesla has quietly given the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive a meaningful range boost in Europe — without installing a larger battery or introducing a new motor.

The updated Model 3 RWD is now rated for up to 572 km (355 miles) of WLTP range, compared with the previous 534 km (332 miles).

That’s an increase of 38 km, or roughly 7.1%.

 

 

New 18-Inch Prismata Wheels Help Unlock More Range

Tesla has replaced the previous 18-inch Photon wheel setup on the European Model 3 RWD with new 18-inch Prismata wheels and efficiency-focused tires.

Although both wheel packages measure 18 inches, the new setup is designed to reduce the amount of energy required to keep the car moving.

Instead of increasing battery capacity, Tesla is extracting more driving distance from the energy already available.

The result is significant:

Previous Model 3 RWD WLTP range: 534 km
Updated Model 3 RWD WLTP range: 572 km
Improvement: 38 km / approximately 7.1%

For an EV, where manufacturers spend enormous resources chasing incremental efficiency gains, a 7% improvement from wheels and tires alone is noteworthy.

Why Wheels and Tires Matter So Much on an EV

At highway speeds, an EV is constantly fighting several forces, including aerodynamic drag and tire rolling resistance.

That means wheel design isn't purely cosmetic.

The shape of a wheel affects how smoothly air travels around the vehicle, while tire construction and compound influence how much energy is lost as the tires deform against the road.

Reduce those losses, and the vehicle can travel farther without adding a single kilowatt-hour of battery capacity.

Tesla has understood this for years.

It's one of the reasons aerodynamic wheel covers have been such a recognizable part of the Model 3 since its introduction. Tesla has consistently balanced wheel appearance, size, weight and aerodynamics to improve overall vehicle efficiency.

The new Prismata setup appears to be another evolution of that philosophy.

The Update Is Currently Limited to Left-Hand-Drive Europe

There is one important limitation.

Tesla says the new range figure applies to European left-hand-drive (LHD) markets where the Prismata wheels are now offered as the standard configuration.

That includes major mainland European markets such as Germany, France, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

For now, right-hand-drive markets such as the United Kingdom and Ireland have not received the same update. Tesla's configurator in those markets continues to show the previous Photon wheel configuration and 534 km range figure.

Whether the Prismata setup will eventually expand to additional markets remains to be seen.

It Also Highlights an Important Lesson About Model 3 Wheel Design

The interesting part of this update isn't simply that Tesla found another 38 kilometers of WLTP range.

It's where Tesla found it.

For Model 3 owners, wheels are often treated as a styling decision: Aero wheels for efficiency, larger wheels for appearance, or aftermarket designs for personalization.

But Tesla's latest update is another reminder that wheel design can influence the overall efficiency equation.

That is also why aerodynamic wheel covers remain popular among Model 3 owners who want to change the appearance of their car without immediately moving to a completely different wheel-and-tire package.

For example, owners of compatible 2017–2023 Model 3 vehicles with factory 18-inch Aero wheels can use Yeslak's 18-inch Aero Performance Uberturbine-style wheel covers to give the original wheels a more aggressive Performance-inspired appearance while retaining a full wheel-cover design.

Rather than replacing the entire wheel, this type of setup works with the existing 18-inch Aero wheel underneath and also provides additional coverage for the rim.

It's worth emphasizing, however, that Tesla's new 572 km WLTP figure specifically refers to its new factory Prismata wheel-and-tire combination. Aftermarket wheel covers should not be assumed to reproduce Tesla's claimed range improvement unless independently tested under comparable conditions.

Small Efficiency Gains Can Make a Big Difference

Tesla's approach here is arguably more interesting than simply fitting a larger battery.

Increasing battery capacity adds cost and weight. Improving efficiency allows the vehicle to make better use of the energy it already carries.

That's particularly important for mass-market EVs such as the Model 3.

A few percentage points gained through tires, wheel aerodynamics, drivetrain optimization, thermal management and software can collectively translate into a noticeable improvement in real-world usability.

And unlike headline-grabbing battery breakthroughs, many of these improvements can happen gradually.

Tesla has followed this philosophy throughout the Model 3's development: refine the vehicle rather than waiting for one revolutionary technology to solve everything.

What stands out to me about this update isn't the extra 38 kilometers itself — it's the fact that Tesla achieved it without touching the battery.

EV discussions often focus heavily on battery capacity. Bigger battery, longer range. But that is only one side of the equation.

Efficiency matters just as much.

Wheels and tires may look like relatively minor components compared with batteries, motors or power electronics, but every reduction in rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag means less energy is wasted over every kilometer driven.

For Tesla owners, there's also a practical takeaway: wheel choice should never be viewed purely as a styling decision.

Larger, heavier or less aerodynamic wheels can look fantastic, but there can be an efficiency trade-off. Conversely, an intelligently designed 18-inch setup can offer a strong balance between appearance, comfort and range.

Tesla moving the Model 3 from 534 km to 572 km through a wheel-and-tire optimization is perhaps one of the clearest recent examples of that principle.

Sometimes the next meaningful EV improvement doesn't require a revolutionary new battery.

Sometimes, it really is about what meets the road.
