Tesla’s 6-Seat Model Y L Receives EU Type Approval

Tesla launched the Model YL in China in August 2025, and the vehicle immediately caught the attention of families in North America and Europe who felt the standard Model Y was not spacious enough. The biggest question was when the larger, more luxurious Model YL would be available in other regions.

During the Q3 2025 earnings call, Elon Musk mentioned that Tesla "might" enter other regional markets by the end of 2026. Now, according to recently issued type approval documents from the Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW), Tesla has received approval to introduce its 6-seater Model YL to the European market.

This long-wheelbase version is set to debut in new regions soon, possibly as early as the first quarter of 2026.

The unique features of the Model YL: A true third row

The Model YL is not simply a Model Y with an added row of seats, like the older Model Y 7-seater version. Instead, it is structurally significantly different from the Model Y and has a longer wheelbase. Type approval documents confirm that this Model YL is the same as the Model YL launched in China, with the following main changes:

• Extended wheelbase of 3,040 mm (150 mm longer)
• Total length increased to 4,976 mm (177 mm extension)
• True 2-2-2 seating layout (2 seats x 3 rows)

Captain’s Chairs

Unlike the 2-3-2 configuration of the old 7-seater, the L variant uses a 2-2-2 layout. The second row features two independent Captain’s chairs with adjustable headrests and powered armrests, creating a center aisle for easy access to the rear seats.

Model Y L vs. Model X Comparison

There are significant differences between the Model Y L, Model Y, and Model X. While there's no absolute winner, the Model Y L boasts some newer features, such as thigh support and ventilated second-row seats. Meanwhile, the Model X has a wider body, resulting in a more spacious aisle and more room for front-seat passengers.

Battery and Performance

The RDW document also disclosed specific powertrain details for the version to be sold to European customers. This version is equipped with an 88.2kWh battery pack, offering a WLTP range of up to 681 kilometers (approximately 423 miles) with 19-inch wheels. Furthermore, it features the same advanced continuously variable damping suspension system as the Model Y Performance, providing an exceptionally smooth ride.

Release Date

Although Elon Musk hinted that the model would be available by the end of 2026, the completion of EU type approval usually only precedes the official release by a few months. Therefore, we expect Tesla is likely aiming to launch this model in the European market by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

This would finally make the Model Y L a direct competitor to large electric SUVs, offering a more affordable Tesla option for large families without the high price tag of the Model X.
