Cybertruck AWD FSD Transfer: Your Three Options After Tesla’s Policy Change

Cybertruck AWD FSD Transfer: Your Three Options After Tesla’s Policy Change

Tesla quietly reversed its previous decision and now allows Cybertruck AWD buyers to transfer Full Self-Driving (Supervised) – but with a $20,000 catch. If you placed an order for the $59K Cybertruck AWD before the FSD transfer rules changed, here is exactly what you need to know.

According to information shared by a Tesla Delivery Advisor and confirmed to X user @NevrEnoughX, affected customers have three paths forward. None of them are ideal, but one might still make sense depending on your situation.

What changed: FSD transfer on Cybertruck AWD

Originally, Tesla’s FSD Transfer Program required delivery by March 31, 2026. That deadline effectively excluded the $59K Cybertruck AWD, because estimated deliveries for that trim stretched into 2027.

After customer pushback, Tesla confirmed that FSD transfers would be honored for orders with original delivery windows on or before March 31 – even if Tesla-caused delays pushed delivery into April. But the cheaper AWD trim was never going to meet that window.

Now, Tesla has changed its mind again. Cybertruck AWD order holders can transfer FSD – but only if they upgrade to a more expensive trim. The cheapest way to unlock the transfer is to move up to the $79,990 Premium AWD, a $20,000 jump.

Your three options as an early Cybertruck AWD order holder

According to official communications from Tesla to buyers who ordered the Cybertruck AWD before the policy change, here are the only three choices:

Option 1 – Proceed with the Cybertruck AWD and forfeit FSD transfer
You keep your $59K base Cybertruck order. But you lose your grandfathered FSD transfer. That means you cannot bring an existing paid FSD license to the new truck. Instead, you would need to subscribe to FSD monthly (since one-time purchases are no longer offered).

Option 2 – Upgrade to a higher trim and keep your FSD transfer
You change your order to the Cybertruck Premium AWD ($79,990) or the Cyberbeast (tri-motor, higher price). In exchange, Tesla allows you to transfer your existing FSD package to the new vehicle. The cost to unlock this benefit is at least $20,000 extra.

Option 3 – Cancel your order and get a $250 refund
You walk away entirely. Tesla refunds the original reservation fee. You lose the Cybertruck and the FSD transfer opportunity.

At a glance: Comparing the three choices

Option 1: Keep AWD Option 2: Upgrade trim Option 3: Cancel
Vehicle cost $59,990 $79,990+ $0 (no vehicle)
FSD transfer allowed? ❌ No ✅ Yes N/A
Out‑of‑pocket extra vs. original plan $0 (but lose FSD value) +$20,000 minimum −$250 refund
FSD cost going forward Monthly subscription required No additional FSD cost (already owned) N/A

What to consider before deciding

How much is your existing FSD license worth to you?
If you bought FSD outright years ago at a lower price (e.g., $6,000–$10,000), transferring it to a new Cybertruck saves you from paying a subscription forever. Option 2 might be worth the upgrade cost if you plan to keep the truck for many years.

Do you really need FSD on the Cybertruck?
The Cybertruck does not come with basic Auto Steer included. Without FSD (or a subscription), you lose even basic lane keeping. For many owners, that is a dealbreaker. If you can live without it, Option 1 becomes more palatable.

Can you afford the $20k bump?
The Premium AWD adds not just FSD eligibility but also more range, better performance, and additional features. If those extras appeal to you anyway, the upgrade might feel less like a penalty and more like an unintended upsell.

What is your delivery timeline?
Some early AWD orders may still be scheduled for late 2026 or 2027. If you are not in a hurry, waiting might give Tesla time to revise policies again. But do not count on it – the current offer is what Tesla is communicating now.

Is walking away the right move?
If neither option makes financial sense, cancelling and getting your $250 back is a clean exit. You can always reorder later if policies change or if you decide to pay for FSD subscription on a future Cybertruck.

The bottom line for Cybertruck buyers

Tesla’s policy flip gives Cybertruck AWD reservation holders a path to transfer FSD – but only by spending at least $20,000 more on a higher trim. The company is effectively using FSD transfer as an upsell tool.

If you already own a paid FSD license and want to keep it, upgrading to the Premium AWD is your only real option. If you do not value FSD that highly, sticking with the base AWD and paying a monthly subscription might still be cheaper over the short term.

Either way, do not expect Tesla to change this again soon. The company has made its position clear: FSD transfer on the cheap Cybertruck is not coming back. Decide based on your budget and how much you truly rely on Full Self-Driving.
