Why Your Tesla Needs a Spoiler?
As a technician who has personally worked on over a thousand Teslas, here is my take: The factory trunk design of the Model 3 and Model Y feels like a blank canvas. A well-fitted spoiler is the "finishing touch" that completes the car’s aesthetic.
From a visual standpoint, the OEM rear lines are very rounded. While they are sleek and minimalist, they often lack a bit of "soul." Adding a spoiler instantly lowers the visual center of gravity at the rear. It adds a sense of depth and contour to the side profile—which can sometimes look a bit bloated—giving it an aggressive, sporty stance that vinyl wraps or decals simply can't replicate.
From a performance perspective, this isn't just about "the look." At highway speeds (specifically above 70 mph / 110 km/h), a spoiler effectively manages the turbulent air rolling off the roofline, increasing rear-end downforce. While it’s not as extreme as a dedicated track wing, you will feel a noticeable improvement in stability and "plantedness" during lane changes or high-speed cornering.
Most importantly, installing it yourself allows you to enjoy the satisfaction of a DIY project. If you take your car to a Tesla-specific boutique or a body shop, the labor costs alone could buy you another high-end accessory. By following the professional techniques I’ve outlined below, you can achieve an OEM-level fitment in your own garage—saving money while ensuring the job is done right.
Professional Installation Process:
Step 1: Surface Preparation
The ambient temperature is critical. I highly recommend performing the install in an indoor environment between 68°F and 86°F (20°C - 30°C).

Deep Clean: Wash the trunk edge thoroughly using a dedicated automotive soap.

De-grease & Strip Wax: This is the most vital step. Use 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to wipe down the installation area completely.

Pro Tip from a 100+ Install Veteran: Even on a brand-new car, the paint often has a factory sealant or wax. If you don't strip this off, the adhesive tape will likely start lifting within a few months.
Step 2: Dry Fit & Marking
Before you peel the adhesive backing, perform a "dry fit." Place the spoiler on the trunk and adjust it until the gaps on both the left and right sides are perfectly symmetrical. Use painter’s tape to mark the center point and the outer edges of the spoiler on the trunk. This creates a reference line so that once the adhesive is exposed, you can seat the spoiler accurately on the first try.
Step 3: Apply Adhesion Promoter
To ensure the bond is rock-solid and won't fail in extreme weather, I strongly recommend using an adhesion promoter (Yeslak spoilers come with this included). Apply a thin, even layer only where the tape will make contact with the trunk. Wait about 30 seconds until the surface becomes tacky. Do not apply it to the entire rear of the car; keep it localized to the contact path.
Step 4: The Taping Technique
Never peel off all the adhesive backing at once! Use the "Pull-Tab Method":

Peel back about 2 inches (5 cm) of the 3M tape backing from each end and fold the tabs outward so they hang past the edge of the spoiler.

Positioning: Align the spoiler with the painter's tape marks you made in Step 2 and set it down gently.

The Pull: Once the alignment is confirmed, slowly pull the exposed tabs to remove the rest of the backing while applying light pressure to the spoiler.

Compression: Press down firmly from the center outward to the ends for at least 30 seconds. This ensures a molecular-level bond between the tape and the clear coat.
Step 5: Curing & Final Check

Heat Treatment: Use a heat gun or a hair dryer to lightly warm the edges of the spoiler (it should feel warm to the touch, not hot). This activates the chemical bonding agents in the 3M tape.

Secondary Securement: Use strips of painter's tape to apply cross-tension across the spoiler, holding it tight against the trunk overnight.

Curing Time: Do not drive at high speeds for 24 hours, and strictly avoid car washes for at least 72 hours.
