Belgium Becomes Fifth European Country to Approve Tesla FSD – Just One Day After Denmark

Belgium has officially approved Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system for public roads, becoming the fifth European Union country to do so. The announcement came just one day after Denmark gave its own green light, signaling that approvals are now accelerating across the continent.

Flemish Minister of Mobility Annick De Ridder broke the news on her X account, posting that she had just signed the approval. "The @Tesla community has been keeping a close eye on this for quite some time," she wrote. "In appreciation of your unwavering interest (and encouragement), you get the scoop here: I just signed the approval!"

Belgium Approves: Fifth EU Country

Belgium joins a rapidly growing list that started with the Netherlands (April 10), followed by Lithuania (May 20), Estonia (May 29), and Denmark (June 9). The approval makes Belgium the fifth European nation to authorize FSD Supervised.

The decision followed a remarkably fast regulatory review. Just over three weeks ago, Tesla began testing on Belgian roads. Now, the system is approved for customer use.

From Testing to Approval in Just Three Weeks

On May 22, Belgian officials confirmed that Tesla had completed 2,000 kilometers of testing in a single week on Flemish roads. Shortly after, the company deployed three vehicles to complete the required 5,000-kilometer testing regimen.

The test routes covered uniquely Belgian driving conditions: tram interactions, bicycle streets (fietstraten), construction zones, and locally specific road signage. According to documents shared by Minister De Ridder, Belgian authorities concluded that FSD "demonstrates significant technological potential and is capable of responding to traffic situations in a defensive, cautious, and anticipatory manner."

Today, just over three weeks after testing first began, FSD is approved in Belgium.

Why Regulators Said Yes

The Belgian review highlighted several key factors in its approval decision:

  • The system's ability to monitor driver attention effectively
  • Potential to contribute to improved road safety when used as intended
  • Defensive and anticipatory driving behavior observed during testing

The approval follows the same pattern set by the Netherlands, where the Dutch RDW issued the first type approval in Europe. Belgium, like Denmark and Lithuania before it, recognized that approval and conducted its own targeted review before giving the final green light.

The European Domino Effect

The back‑to‑back approvals in Denmark and Belgium (June 9 and June 10) show that bureaucratic hurdles are dissolving faster than anticipated. The Dutch RDW approval has become a template that other EU member states can reference, dramatically shortening their own review processes.

At the recent CVPR conference in Denver, Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy presented a map showing every country still awaiting FSD approval. The rapid pace of approvals in recent weeks suggests that a broader EU‑wide rollout is now firmly on track.

With five countries now on board, pressure is mounting on remaining member states to follow suit. Sweden has already expanded public road testing, and Latvia is accelerating its own paperwork.

What Belgian Owners Need to Know

Hardware requirement: As in other European markets, the initial rollout of FSD Supervised will be exclusive to vehicles equipped with Hardware 4 (HW4 / AI4). Owners with older HW3 vehicles will not have access at launch.

Software version: Belgium will receive a customized variant of FSD v14, tailored specifically for European traffic regulations, road signs, and driving behaviors – including adaptations for trams, bicycle infrastructure, and roundabouts.

Rollout timing: Tesla has not yet announced an exact date for pushing the software to Belgian vehicles, but based on other markets, the update should begin within days or weeks after final homologation paperwork is completed.

Supervised driving: Like all FSD Supervised deployments, the system requires an attentive driver ready to take control at any moment. It is not unsupervised autonomy.

Which Country Could Be Next?

Industry watchers expect Sweden or Latvia to be the next European country to approve FSD. Germany, France, Spain, and Italy remain in testing phases but are likely to follow as the Dutch template gains wider acceptance.

A major approval in the United Kingdom, while outside the EU, would represent a significant milestone. London's dense urban environment and left‑hand traffic would be a true test of FSD's adaptability.

For now, Belgium's approval – coming just one day after Denmark – proves that Europe's FSD momentum is real. Owners across the continent can expect more good news in the weeks ahead.

We will update this article as Tesla confirms the exact rollout date for Belgian owners and as additional European countries grant approval.
